MPF001 incorporates music theory fundamentals like tempo, beats per minute, time signatures, notation, song structure, and arranging techniques.

Since the 1980s drum machines have greatly influenced the sound of modern pop music. Music Production Fundamentals covers the history of drum machines, samplers, and grove-boxes, requiring each student produce their first beats on classic drum machines from the 80s and 90s, before learning computer-based drum programming in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) environment.
